Smith Captures First Southern Whelen Modified Victory at Caraway Speedway

July 2, 2010 - John Smith and his crew captured the checkered flag during the Firecracker 150 at Caraway Speedway. Smith started 13th in the field of Modifieds. As the race progressed, Smith moved his way to second. Due to a caution, the race was forced to a green, white, checkered finish. Smith and L.W. Miller (driver of the # 36) were on the front row battling for first. Smith was able to get around Miller to take the lead for the lap that really counts...the last one! Smith and his crew were ready for this win and enjoyed every moment. More pictures coming soon! For complete race details, visit NASCAR local tracks.

This win has pushed Smith to fourth in the NASCAR Southern Whelen Modified Tour points standings. Join us for the next Modified race, a 199-lap event, at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday, August 7.

Two Races....Two Top Ten Finishes to Start the 2010 Season
The #25 crew has had a very consistent start to the 2010 season. The Atlanta Motor Speedway and Caraway Speedway races have resulted in 8th place finishes. Next, the team heads to South Boston, VA for a Saturday, April 3rd race.

Bristol Motor Speedway Photos - Check out the Photo Gallery
The photo gallery has been updated with pictures from Bristol Motor Speedway! The Southern Whelen Modified Tour has kept the #25 crew busy! The race at Bristol was great experience for the team. Even with a super tight, vibrating car and storm clouds looming, the team finished 23rd out of a field of 40 cars.

The August 29th race at Caraway Speedway was the best for the team so far this year with a 5th place finish. Last weekend, the team raced at Myrtle Beach Speedway, bringing home a 7th place finish. Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, NC is on the agenda for this weekend.

The team heads to Bristol Motor Speedway after a disappointing Race at Bowman Gray Stadium
The #25 Team will head to Bristol, TN this week for what is sure to be two very exciting days. The team will practice on Tuesday and race on Wednesday. The high banked track of Bristol Motor Speedway is called "The World's Fastest Half-Mile". The Modifieds will prove this true as Ted Christopher, driver of the #36 , has already broken a track record by running a 14.479 second lap during a practice season earlier this season. Needless to say, this is going to be a race that is talked about for months to come.

The most recent race for John Smith and his crew was on August 1st at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, NC. A good qualifying run put the team in 8th but they took the green flag in 10th due to a draw. The race was was off to a good start as Smith made his way in-line during the first lap. The second caution of the night, during lap 27, was the result of a huge pileup in turns one and two. Multiple cars, including the leaders, were tangled up in this wreck. However, Smith saw an opening and came barrelling through the field to take the first position.

Racing Bowman Gray

During the next 120 laps there were multiple cautions, all with double filed restarts. Smith fought hard and succeeded at staying on top. Just when the team thought the stars might line up in their favor, heartbreak happened. Smith came to a complete stop past the start/finish line during lap 147. He radioed to the crew that something was wrong with the car. With that, the race was over for the #25 crew, leaving them with a 13th place finish.

Many drivers left Bowman Gray disappointed with the nights results...and with mangled race cars! During lap 170, as the Modifieds rounded turn two, contact was made and the pileup began! At least five cars were taken out with this wreck. Track crews and emergency officials quickly checked each car for injuries. Luckily, it was only the cars that were hurt.

The Bristol race will include drivers from the Southern Whelen Modified Tour as well as the Whelen Modified Tour. For those of you unable to make the trip to Bristol on Wednesday, August 19th, the race will be televised on SPEED (on a 45-minute tape-delay) beginning at 7 p.m.

Loose Car Meant a 12th Place Finish For Smith at Caraway Speedway

With one race already cancelled due to rain for the weekend, the team headed to Caraway Speedway Saturday night for 150 lap event. The team qualified in sixth position but started in ninth after a draw. After the green flag flew, it took Smith three laps to get in line, in the 11th position. After 60 laps and three cautions, Smith had found his way to eighth. Before he could make any ground to move closer to the leaders, several of the cars started to get loose, including the #25 Modified.

During lap 88, the crew talked about a pit stopped but opted to stay on the track and give it another try. If the tires were gone, there wasn't a lot they could do. It wasn't until lap 107 when Smith got really loose out of turn four that the crew decided to go ahead and make the pit stop. The team tried to tighten the car with wedge and air pressure adjustments. The changes made a slight improvement and Smith was able to gain back a couple of spots he had lost due to the pit stop. He finished the race in twelfth.

Top 10 Finish for Season Opener at Concord Speedway

John Smith and the #25 crew headed to Concord, NC bright and early Saturday morning for the 150 lap season opener of the NASCAR Southern Whelen Modified Tour. The crew was happy with the two early practice sessions and qualifying effort that landed the 8th place starting position. Just before the sound of the rumbling engines, Smith thanked his crew and everyone that made this season possible.

The race started door to door with Tim Brown, driver of the #83 Modified. A strong start had Smith in seventh by lap 11. During the first caution of the night, at lap 31, there was a lot of chatter on the radios about saving tires. The double filed restart sent several cars spinning in turn four. This forced Smith back to the 10th position. During lap 80, Smith started to lose power steering. This caused him to drop back several spots. As the power steering came and went, Smith managed to finish the race in ninth. Check out the photo gallery for pictures from this event.

Two races this week will keep the team busy. Friday night's race will be hosted by Ace Speedway and Saturday night will be the first appearance for the Modifieds at Caraway Speedway.

First Race of the Season this weekend at Concord Motorsport Park

Last weekend was suppose to be the start of the 2009 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified season...but rain and racing just don't mix. The races were cancelled for Caraway Speedway. Therefore, the season opener will be at Concord Motorsport Park in Concord, NC this Saturday night.

So far, the weather is looking good. A little cool at night but nothing a race team hasn't been through before. The crew has been hard at work getting ready for this race. Check back here for race results and hopefully some pictures too.

NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Awards Banquet

October 17, 2008 - This past Friday night was an exciting one for John Smith and his team. Not because they were getting ready to fire up the engine on the #25 Modified, but because they attended the annual NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Awards Banquet in Winston-Salem, NC. The #25 team filled an entire table with sponsors, family, and friends as Dick Berggren hosted an evening of awards and celebration.

Smith took home two trophies and some prize money to boot. He was presented with the eighth place trophy and also took home the "POWERade Power Move of the Race" trophy. Click the video below to see Smith accept the Power Move of the Race award.

Before the night was over, the #25 team had a total of four trophies on their table. Car owner Grady Tutterow of Tutterow Surveying in Mocksville, NC was the proud recipient of the eighth place car owner award. The team wants to extend a huge thank you to Grady for all his support and dedication through the years!!

Jody Utt, crew chief of the #25 Modified, was surprised to accept the "Darryl Mabe Memorial Mechanic of the Year" award. This award is given to a crew member most deserving in the eyes of the Modified drivers.

It was a big night for the team. It gave them the motivation to start thinking of next year. They already have ideas in mind and are ready to get busy. It will only be a few short months until the roar of the engines will rattle the tracks again. See ya there!
