| Twin 50 Lap Races at Bowman Gray Stadium | |||||||||||||||||
| July 30,2011 - For the twin 50 lap races, Smith drove the #0 car. He started the first race in 7th. With four cautions, Smith spinning on the front stretch and double filed cone restarts, Smith finished the first race in 9th. | |||||||||||||||||
| Starting positions for the second 50 lap race of the night were determined by the "Madhouse Scramble". Smith started in 7th. The race was over half way complete before the first caution of the night came. During the restart, Smith was forced to fall to 9th after not being able to get inline. During the next caution, the officials radioed that Smith was leaking and needed to pit. After a quick trip to the pits, the crew determined that the car wasn't leaking and returned to the track. For the remaining laps, Smith said the clutch wasn't working but was able to get by several cars to finish in the same position he started, 7th. | |||||||||||||||||
| Unfortunate Night at Bowman Gray Stadium | |||||||||||||||||
| July 10, 2011 - Unfortunately, Saturday night's race was finished before it even started for John Smith. The afternoon started well as the crew took the track for practice. However, after only 7 laps, Smith radioed to the crew that the motor started skipping. After further investigation, it was determined that the motor had a terminal problem in the valve train and ended the night. | |||||||||||||||||

| July 5, 2011 - John Smith and the crew traveled to Caraway Speedway in Asheboro over the Holiday weekend to compete in the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Firecracker 150. Smith qualified 7th in the field of 16 Modifieds. | |||||||||||||||||
| The race started smooth as the Modifieds took the green flag and Smith was in line by lap 1. The first caution of the night came on lap 11. Smith took advantage of the double filed restart and was able to pass the #1 of Burt Myers for the 6th position. During the next 75 laps, Smith remains in 6th through another restart and the car becoming loose. The team discussed the situation, saying that most cars were getting loose and Smith's lap times remained consistent with others. | |||||||||||||||||
| The fourth caution of the night came on lap 98, just as Smith and Jason Myers, driver of the #4, were battling for the 5th position. It was determined by NASCAR officials that Smith was in the lead and would restart in 5th. Within a few laps, Smith had also cleared the #23 of Brian Loftin to be in the fourth position. Because of several late cautions, the race ended with an extra eight laps on the board, 158 total laps. | |||||||||||||||||
| Smith finished the race in fourth, strengthening his second place standing in points for the series. The next race for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will be August 6th at Bowman Gray Stadium. The next race for Bowman Gray Stadium point standings will be this weekend, July 9th. John will be driving the #0 again this week. | |||||||||||||||||

He finished 6th and 5th in the twin 25-lap races. | |||||||||||||||||
| The next race at Bowman Gray Stadium will be Saturday, July 9th. Starting positions for the 100-lap race will be determined by random draw. All races at the Stadium this weekend will be worth double points, could be a game changer for many racers. | |||||||||||||||||

| Bowman Gray Stadium 100-Lap Race...from 19th to 8th | |||||||||||||||||
| June 4, 2011 - The 100-lap event at Bowman Gray Stadium for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour was an exciting race for all the fans. Starting positions were determined by random draw. The #25 team drew the 19th starting position. The 100-lap race consisted of double filed cone restarts. When the drivers are given the "one lap to go" signal, they must choose their lane, inside the cone or outside of the cone. | |||||||||||||||||
| The race started very promising for Smith as he advanced to 15th by lap three and onto 10th by lap 30. With three cautions already in the books, everyone knew it was going to be a yellow-flag filled race with lots of restarts. By lap 82 there had been three more cautions and a wreck that Smith was able dodge, putting him in 5th. However, during the restart on lap 85, the top six cars were fighting for position which ended up causing a big pile up in turns one and two. All of the rear sheet metal of the #25 was demolished. Smith was able to continue the race but was forced back to the 8th position, where he finished. Even though the teams hopes of a top five finish didn't happen, coming from 19th to 8th with a wrecked car at Bowman Gray Stadium isn't all that bad. | |||||||||||||||||

| Twin 25-lap Races this Past Weekend at Bowman Gray Stadium | |||||||||||||||||
| May 28, 2011 - After winning their last race, the team had set the bar high for the twin 25-lap races this past weekend. The first races starting order was determined by qualifying. Smith qualified and started the field of 19 cars in 8th. The first 25-lap event got off to a rocky start. Before a single lap was on the board, the teams saw the first caution of the night. Once the green flag fell for the second time, only three laps passed before a wreck in turns one and two brought out the yellow again. Smith moved up a position and was able to restart in 7th. Another caution during lap 10 put Smith in 6th where he finished the race. Burt Myers, driver of the #1, took the checkered flag. | |||||||||||||||||
| The Madhouse Scramble is used on the twin 25-lap races. Because Myers won the first race, he drew for his starting position in the second race. He drew 14th, meaning he would start 14th and the field of cars from 14th and up would invert. This put Smith to start the second race in 9th. The race consisted of 25 green flag laps. Not a single caution was called. Early into the race, Smith moved to the outside in an effort to gain track position. Other cars had the same idea and Smith was unable to advance. He was shuffled back a few positions into 11th, where he finished the race. | |||||||||||||||||
| John Smith will return to Bowman Gray Stadium this weekend for the 100 lap race. Starting positions are determined by random draw. Love it or hate it, it makes for interesting racing. | |||||||||||||||||

| Two 25 lap Races this past weekend at Bowman Gray Stadium | |||||||||||||||||
| May 7, 2011 - This past Saturday, the #25 team raced in two 25 lap races at Bowman Gray Stadium. The starting line-up for the first race was determined by qualifying. Smith qualified in the 10th position. The green flag flew and the cars headed to turn one. Before coming out of turn two, several cars got tangled up and Smith was forced back to 15th. After the restart, he moves past three cars to put himself in 12th. He radioed to the crew that the brakes seem to be sticking. The short race and the brake problem kept him in the 12th position as the checkered flag was thrown. Tim Brown, driver of the #83, won the first 25 lap race. | |||||||||||||||||
| Starting positions for the second 25 lap race were determined by the Madhouse Scramble. Brown, winner of the first race, drew 8th position from the hat. The field was inverted from 8th forward. This didn't affect Smith's starting position. He started 12th. Smith got a great run as he took the green flag for the second 25 lap race. He went to the outside and passed three cars to put him in 9th by lap 4. There were two more cautions during the race but Smith wasn't affected. He finished the race in 9th. | |||||||||||||||||

| Another Top Five Finish For the Smith and the #25 Modified | |||||||||||||||||
|
|||||||||||||||||
The famous quarter-mile race track was home to thousands of excited fans on Saturday evening. As tradition, the crews pushed the Modifieds onto the track as the official start to the season. The command was given and the engines roared to life. Smith started the race in 8th. With only four laps on the board, the first yellow flag was brought out. Bowman Gray is home to the double filed restart with the use of a cone being placed at the start finish line. The Modified drivers have the option to go to the inside or outside of the cone. This allows the driver to "pick their line". By lap 32, there have been two more cautions and the Modifieds are red flagged while the track crew cleans up a nasty wreck leaving the #72, of Brent Elliot, on the front stretch guard rail. During the next restart, Smith takes the outside of the cone and gets in line behind #83, Tim Brown. This is where he stays for the next long stretch of green flag racing - 100 laps. Smith occasionally gives Brown a friendly tap just to remind him that he is there. With only 50 laps remaining, another caution is brought out due to a wreck. During the restart, Smith takes the outside line, putting him on the outside pole. He and #23 of Brian Loftin are nose to nose through turn one. Smith starts to pull away on the outside, off of turn two, then Loftin taps Smith in the left rear and he is immediately sideways on the back stretch. Superb driving by Smith kept the #25 Modified moving but was forced to restart in 6th. With four more cautions, a red flag and a green, white, checkered finish to lap 202, Smith finished the race in fourth. |

| Threat of Rain Postpones Second Race of the Season | |||||||||||||||||
March 26, 2011 - The threat of rain has forced NASCAR officials to postpone the second Whelen Southern Modified race of the season at Caraway Speedway. The tour heads to Hickory on Saturday, April 2nd for the next scheduled race. |
|||||||||||||||||
| Sixth Place Finish For the First Race of the 2011 Season | |||||||||||||||||
| March 13, 2011 - John Smith and his crewed started the 2011 season with a solid sixth place finish. The two day event at Caraway Speedway (Asheboro, NC) attracted twenty-one NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified contenders and a large crowd of spectators. | |||||||||||||||||
| During Saturday's qualifying efforts, Smith landed in fifteenth due to a tight race car. The team came back to the track on Sunday with an optimistic attitude and it paid off. As the cars prepared to take the green flag, Smith thanked the team for their hard work. The race started smoothly with Smith moving to thirteenth by lap twelve. Smith continued to fight his way forward through the pack. | |||||||||||||||||
| The first caution of the night came on lap 63. Smith radioed to the crew that the car was too tight. He said it was starting to free up but snug in the center. Several racers decided to pit but Smith decided that track position was his top priority and he restarted in 8th. Determination and three more cautions put Smith in second by lap 129. | |||||||||||||||||
| During the next twenty laps, Smith knew something wasn't right with the car as he lost four positions. He came to the checkered flag in sixth. After the race, the crew discovers that the right front tire was the main problem. The tire had been leaking air, leaving it with only 10 lbs by the end of the race. The team felt good about the nights results and are looking forward to the next race on March 26th at Caraway Speedway. | |||||||||||||||||
